ATEX

The ATEX directive, known as Directive 94/9/EC supercedes all previous regulations in Europe applying to the use of components and systems where potentially explosive conditions may occur. This relates to the dangers of both dust (grain, tobacco etc) and gas, from causes of ignition such as high temperature, spark and arc. Equipment which is to be used in a potentially explosive enviroment (or which may be associated with the function of the same) has to be certified by an independent body, and labelled for the "level" of safe operation (gas, dust etc) using a code. Electrical & Electronic Timers & Encoders

Because these devices operate electrically they are not intrinsically safe by design and require individual product certification. This may may or may not be available depending on the methods of enclosure, but as a general rule - These items are not ATEX approved. The Timer & Counter Company will list any products with ATEX certification, on this site as approvals are obtained. Contact us for more details. ATEX compliant products are likely to be limited in range and more expensive.

Pneumatic Equipment

If the risk analysis of explosive hazards show that no potential sources of ignition exist, an item does not fall under the ATEX directive, in which case a Declaration of Conformity and ATEX marking is not required. This may apply to products used in purely pneumatic systems. For pneumatic devices that are plastic bodied, totally pneumatic without electrical coils or contacts then we are able provide an Attestation of Conformity. Please note that this applies only to goods supplied directly by either The Timer & Counter Company or H. Kuhnke Ltd. An example ATEX declaration is available here.

It is the ultimate responsibility of all systems builders to ensure that the total package / assembly / system complies with Directive 94/9/C as may be applicable. If in doubt please contact us directly with details of your application and the products you are considering using.
