Pneumatic Counters > FAQs

Most Kuhnke pneumatic counters are panel mount devices. Count is displayed mechanically. There are totalising versions (one display, normally 6 digits) which simply count pulses until reset. Predetermining or pre-set counters count up from zero to a pre-selected figure (2 displays, in 3 and 5 digit versions), or down to zero from a pre-selected figure(one display in 3 and 5 digit versions). In these counters a 3/2 valve is operated on completion of count. The normally closed valve switches to open. The counter remains open until it is reset. Counters vary by function, number of digits displayed, and reset method. Generally with M5 connections but some 4mm integrated push on connector options.

Reset Method
  1. Manual - push button on front of unit (standard feature on all models except 8 digit totalisers). A small hole in the push button enables a padlock/device to be fitted for tamper protection.
  2. Pneumatic - Send a signal to the separate reset port.
  3. Auto - Counter automatically resets when preset is reached. Choose manual/pneumatic option or manual/auto option when selecting a model.
Air Quality
Dry non lubricated air filtered to 5 micron
Biggest Operating Problems
Oil in the air. Unit floods, works erratically and fails completely. No repairs possible.
Overpressure (max 8 bar). Unit fails, no repair possible.
Reset & count signals arrive together (pneumatic reset models). Check that there is no chance of a count signal arriving when reset is taking place. Unit locks out, often with last digit half-moved. Call The Timer and Counter Company for advice.
"Ghost" reset signals on pneumatic reset
Dirt on front buttons! If used in dirty conditions use a front panel protective cover (available with lock if required).
M5 of 4mm tube connections?
We recommenced M5. Most counters are fitted into panels. M5 is more secure and more flexible in terms of what can be fitted to it. However 4mm push on tube connections are available options.
What is the difference between "Kuhnke" and "Hengstler" brand?
None, where a Kuhnke branded counter is available it is identical to the Hengstler product. There are more Hengstler branded options however.
